History of the Association

The Calcutta Statistical Association was formed on November 9, 1945 by a group of statisticians who were members of the teaching staff of the Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta. Ever since its inception the Association has been working in close collaboration with the Department. The founding members started with a clear and consistent set of objectives meant essentially to promote the study of science Statistics, both pure and applied, and all matters and subjects allied thereto; to provide for research and instructions for the advancement of and dissemination of knowledge of Statistics; and to publish reports, bulletins, books and other documents.

Using its limited manpower and other resources the Association continues to play a key role in developing Statistics. The library of the Association has a good collection of books and journals. Members, research scholars and scientific workers continue to avail the reference facilities of the library. Apart from consultancy and advisory service rendered to individuals and organizations, the Association readily extends its help and co-operation whenever approached by any association, society, university department or institution.

The Association has always focused on advancement and dissemination of knowledge of Statistics through its various publications. The Calcutta Statistical Association Bulletin, from the very beginning, paid due attention to quality of articles. Through the dedicated and painstaking efforts of its founding Editor, Prof. H.K. Nandi, the Bulletin soon became a regular and respected scientific periodical in which high quality research articles, including some containing path-breaking techniques and novel results, were published. Even after Prof. Nandi left his charge, the journal has been striving to maintain the standard and tradition set forth by him. Today the Bulletin is highly rated by the International community of Statisticians. Since 2016, Calcutta Statistical Association Bulletin is being published by SAGE Publications.

The Association regularly organizes lectures by eminent scholars from India and abroad. Since 1991 Calcutta Statistical Association, jointly with the Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta is organizing an International Symposium on Probability and Statistics every three years.
